A Real Customer Question About Magnesium Supplements
Recently, we received an email from a customer who purchased our I Love Health® Magnesium Glycinate 500mg supplement.
She raised a question that many consumers may have when comparing different magnesium supplements.
Here is an excerpt from her email:
"I recently purchased a bottle of your Magnesium Glycinate 500MG. I am confused as to why it says each tablet contains 90mg magnesium? What happened to the other 410MG?
I've taken Magnesium Oxide 500MG for years and it gives me 500MG per serving."
This is an excellent question, and we appreciate our customer bringing it to our attention.
We believe many other consumers may have the same concern, so we would like to explain the difference.
Where Did the Other 410mg Go?
Nothing is missing from the capsule.
The answer comes down to the difference between Magnesium Glycinate and Elemental Magnesium.
Magnesium glycinate is a compound made by combining magnesium with glycine, an amino acid.
Our Magnesium Glycinate 500mg product provides:
| What You're Getting | Amount per Capsule |
|---|---|
| Magnesium glycinate compound | 500mg |
| Elemental magnesium | 90mg |
| Remaining compound components, primarily associated with glycine | Approximately 410mg |
In other words, 500mg refers to the entire magnesium glycinate compound, while 90mg represents the actual magnesium mineral.
The remaining 410mg is not missing magnesium. It is the other portion of the compound.
This is an important distinction, and it applies to many mineral supplements, not just magnesium.
But My Previous Magnesium Oxide Says 500mg. What's the Difference?
This is another very reasonable question.
Magnesium supplements come in several forms, including magnesium oxide, magnesium glycinate, magnesium citrate, and others.
Each has a different chemical composition and contains a different percentage of elemental magnesium.
Magnesium oxide naturally has a much higher elemental magnesium percentage by weight than magnesium glycinate.
However, the amount of magnesium listed on the front of the bottle does not tell the entire story.
Magnesium absorption also matters.
Research has shown that magnesium oxide generally has lower bioavailability than several other magnesium forms.
Magnesium glycinate is commonly chosen by consumers looking for a form that is generally well tolerated and suitable for their daily wellness routine.
This does not mean that 90mg of magnesium from glycinate is necessarily equivalent to 500mg from oxide. Absorption varies, and the two amounts should not be treated as interchangeable.
The best approach is to check both the elemental magnesium content and the type of magnesium used.
What If You Need More Magnesium?
Another common question is:
"If one capsule only provides 90mg of elemental magnesium, can I take more than one?"
Your magnesium needs depend on several factors, including your age, diet, health conditions, medications, and whether you already take other supplements.
For reference, the National Institutes of Health recommends total daily magnesium intakes of approximately:
-
Adult men: 400–420mg per day
-
Adult women: 310–320mg per day
These recommended amounts include magnesium obtained from food, beverages, and supplements combined.
If your healthcare professional determines that you need additional magnesium, they may recommend adjusting the number of capsules based on the elemental magnesium content.
For our 500mg magnesium glycinate formula, the amounts would be:
| Capsules | Total Magnesium Glycinate | Elemental Magnesium |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 500mg | 90mg |
| 2 | 1,000mg | 180mg |
| 3 | 1,500mg | 270mg |
Important: These figures explain the magnesium content at different quantities; they are not individual dosage recommendations.
For adults, the general upper limit for magnesium from supplements and medications is 350mg per day unless otherwise recommended by a healthcare professional. Magnesium naturally present in food does not count toward this supplemental limit.
If you think you need more magnesium, we recommend speaking with your doctor or qualified healthcare professional before increasing the number of capsules.
Always follow the directions on your product label.
Why We Believe in Transparent Magnesium Labeling
At I Love Health®, we believe customers deserve to know exactly what is inside their supplements.
That's why we want consumers to understand both numbers:
500mg Magnesium Glycinate — 90mg Elemental Magnesium
The first number describes the magnesium-containing compound. The second tells you how much elemental magnesium it provides.
Neither number should be confused with the other.
We also encourage customers to compare different magnesium supplements by looking closely at the Supplement Facts panel, rather than relying only on the largest number printed on the front of the bottle.
Understanding what you're taking is an important part of making informed nutrition choices.
A Final Word to Our Customers

Questions like this help us improve how we communicate nutritional information and give us an opportunity to share useful knowledge with others.
Whether you prefer magnesium glycinate, magnesium oxide, or another magnesium form, we encourage you to choose products based on your personal needs, ingredient quality, and clear nutritional information.
At I Love Health®, we believe better health starts with better understanding.
